Recommended Semester/Year Abroad Programs in Spain or Latin America
Although Bard does not directly sponsor any semester or year abroad programs in Spain or Latin America, we have several programs that we can recommend if you wish to truly immerse yourself in the language and culture of the Spanish-speaking worlld.

Overview

If you hope to study abroad during your time at Bard, please speak with your Spanish professor as soon as possible. Your professor can help you devise a study plan that will take your semester/year abroad into account, as well as provide you with materials for the programs listed below and others. Bard also has a study abroad coordinator, Trish Fleming (fleming@bard.edu) who will help you to complete the paperwork so that your credits will transfer to Bard.

Although Bard does not directly sponsor any semester or year abroad programs in Spain or Latin America, we have several programs that we can recommend if you wish to truly immerse yourself in the language and culture of the Spanish-speaking world. Among others, these include:

If you are planning to major in Spanish Studies, a semester abroad is considered a requirement, though we do recognize that exceptions must sometimes be made. In order to qualify for a program that will place you in challenging classes, often with native speakers, you must have completed the equivalent of 4 or 5 semesters of college Spanish (Bard’s 202 or 301/302, respectively). Summer programs can be fun and informative, but if your goal is to experience a true cultural immersion and to make significant advances in your mastery of the Spanish language, we strongly recommend at least a full semester abroad. If you are searching on your own (studyabroad.com can be a useful tool), look for programs that require at least a 3.0/4.0 GPA. When considering housing arrangements, we strongly encourage you to live with a host family: students who study abroad often report that this was the most meaningful aspect of their time abroad.
